Here are the top five stories today in Charlotte:

  1. Market trends show that if you've purchased a house recently, you may have overspent by more than $100,000. Data from the Florida Atlantic University (FAU) business school reveals that the "average home in Charlotte is selling for about 55% more than its expected amount." WBTV reports, "In April 2022, the average expected price of a home here was $239,803, according to FAU's study. Instead, the average house was selling for $372,300 — about a 55% difference. This has been great news for sellers in Charlotte." (WBTV)
  2. Blaze Pizza locations in Charlotte and Asheville will donate a portion of sales from select pizzas designated as "Hero Pies" to the Salute to Heroes Charlotte Foundation, from June 20 through July 20. According to WCCB Charlotte, "Salute to Heroes Charlotte Foundation is partnering with Blaze to promote the specialty pies in an effort to support six first responder families. ... During the fundraising period, officials say Blaze's Meat Eater and Red Vine pizzas will be designated as 'Hero Pies.'" (WCCB Charlotte)
  3. Dena J. King, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina, recently announced that Yesenia Rodriguez who a resident of Charlotte, "pleaded guilty to conspiring to commit wire fraud for fraudulently obtaining over $100,000 in COVID-19 relief funds." According to filed court documents, "Rodriguez engaged in a conspiracy to defraud the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) by, among other things, obtaining an Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) based on false information." (Department of Justice)
  4. We are approaching one of the busiest travel times of the year. AAA predicted that this "Independence Day will be the second busiest since 2000 as travel volumes continue to trend up. ... About 1.4 million North Carolinians are expected to travel 50 miles or more this holiday." According to Spectrum News, "Gas prices are top of mind for everyone driving for the Fourth of July, but people who are flying are not without their concerns either as thousands of flights have been canceled in recent weeks."   5. Black Bourbon Society's 2nd Annual Open Door Tour will be in Charlotte all weekend long! According to WCCB Charlotte, "Black Bourbon Society will hold events for those of legal drinking age kicking off the 2nd Annual Open Door Tour. The tour will highlight Black-owned bars and restaurants that serve as cultural pillars in their respective communities." (WCCB Charlotte)
