Here are the top five stories today in Charlotte:
- The first COVID-19 vaccines for children ages six months to four years old are being considered for authorization by the Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention this week. Doctors in the Charlotte area are closely watching the approval process. If the vaccine is approved, the Biden Administration will most likely make the first vaccines available by the week of June 20. (WCNC.com)
- Leaders of Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools are trying to get approval from the school board to auction off 46,000 clear backpacks. These clear backpacks were initially ordered for security reasons after incidents of guns and other weapons found in students' backpacks. Data shows that 30 guns were found on CMS campuses during the 2021-22 school year. (WBTV)
- A cigarette that wasn't discarded properly caused a fire at the Country Club Apartments that resulted in displacing nine families from their apartments on Friday. Charlotte fire crews responded to heavy fire around 6:30 p.m. No injuries were reported. (CBS17.com)
- Laura Jean Swartz, a pedestrian who was hit by a car off Eastway Drive in Charlotte on May 29, died on June 7. According to police, Swartz was crossing the northbound lanes of Eastway Drive just before 10 p.m. when she was hit. (WBTV)
- A shooting in west Charlotte on Saturday morning left one person dead and another in critical condition. The shooting happened after 9 a.m. along Glenwood Drive near a motel just off Interstate 85. Both victims are believed to be motel employees. Police say that a homicide investigation is underway. (WCNC.com)
