Here are the top seven stories in Charlotte today:
- Instawork, a platform for connecting businesses with skilled workers, is offering Charlotte workers the ability to make a living wage. According to The Bakersfield Californian, "in Charlotte, the average hourly pay rate on the Instawork platform is $16.13, more than double the local minimum wage of $7.25, an hourly rate that has not been increased by the state in more than a decade. ... More than 22,000 people in Charlotte have already downloaded the Instawork app and are working to staff business locations across the area." (The Bakersfield Californian)
- A stabbing in east Charlotte left someone with life-threatening injuries. According to WBTV, "one person was injured during a stabbing in east Charlotte on Thursday afternoon. ... The incident happened in the 1200 block of Thomas Avenue in the Plaza Midwood area around 12:56 p.m. ... Witnesses said the incident began when a car nearly hit a person trying to cross the road, which led up to the stabbing." (WBTV)
- According to WCNC, "an AdoptAClassroom.org survey of more than 4,600 pre-K through 12th grade teachers at public, private and charter schools paints a grim picture. The survey asked teachers a variety of questions to get a better understanding of the profession and how it changed during the 2021-22 school year. Of those surveyed, 81% said the overall workload has increased and 80% said they’re spending more time addressing students’ mental health. Nearly three-quarters of teachers (71%) reported spending more of their own money on classroom materials last year than the previous year." (WCNC.com)
- Le Diner en Blanc is coming to the area on October 8. According to WCNC, "Le Dîner en Blanc is a much-anticipated annual event, where the location is kept secret until the very last minute. Thousands of people, dressed all in white, meet for a mass “chic picnic” in a public space. ... Over the course of the evening, guests experience the beauty and value of their city's public spaces by participating in the unexpected. Beyond the spectacle and elegance of the dinner itself, guests are brought together from diverse backgrounds by good taste and a love of beauty. ... There are no disruptions — no car traffic, no pedestrian traffic — only amazed and astonished looks from passersby observing the scene before them." (WCNC.com)
- No Filter Coffee Fest is coming to Charlotte. According to Daily Coffee News, "more than 30 quality-focused coffee roasting and coffee-adjacent companies will be making the trek to Charlotte, North Carolina, next month for the return of the No Filter Coffee Fest (formerly known as the POUR Coffee Festival). Designed to bridge the gap between specialty coffee roasters and coffee-loving consumers while nurturing the Southeastern United States coffee scene as a whole, the event will take place Sunday, Sept. 25, at Camp North End. ... Tickets for the 2022 event start at $25. Guests will be allowed unlimited samplings from more than three dozen craft roasting, tea and related companies from throughout the Southeast." (Daily Coffee News)
- According to WBTV, "the North Carolina Film Office recently announced five more television and film projects that will receive millions of dollars in support for choosing to film here in the state. Three of those projects are being worked on right here in our backyard. That includes a PureFlix film titled “Second Time Around.” The film stars actress Karen Abercrombie of the movie “War Room.” (WBTV)
- Coffee wakes you up when you're sleepy but need to start your day. But did you know it could engage all of your senses too? According to Fox 46 Charlotte, "the owner of a new kind of coffee house is connecting with the Charlotte community through all five senses. The inspiration for the Haerfest Coffee Roasting Company came in 1998. ... Haerfest Coffee workers don’t just roast coffee at the location, they also package it and sell it at a connected coffee house." The "coffee lab" is where the experience starts — you can "experience different notes of coffee. ... Each different flavor of coffee is associated with a color. With the press of a button, the coffee lab lighting will change to those coffee colors. ... The goal is to use all five senses as a helpful way for customers to choose their favorite cup of joe." (Fox 46 Charlotte)
