🌱 YMCA Needs More Lifeguards + Bank Donates $2.5M To UNC Charlotte
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Charlotte.
Hello and happy Friday! I'm back in your inbox this morning to walk you through everything you need to know about what's happening locally. Let's have at it.
First, today's weather:
Record-breaking temperatures. High: 101 Low: 72.
Here are the top five stories in Charlotte today:
- Charlotte YMCA is looking to hire more lifeguards because this year's shortage is worse than last year. Usually, the YMCA needs between 600 to 800 lifeguards to keep watch over the people in the pools at its 17 branches and camps. A lack of lifeguards will mean that hours of operation for each pool lacking adequate coverage, will have to be limited. (Spectrum News)
- A 66-year-old man from Buxton died Wednesday after he was brought out of the surf at Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The man collapsed on the beach after being rescued from the ocean by bystanders, who immediately began CPR. The CPR and resuscitation efforts by emergency personnel did not prevent his death. (Spectrum News)
- Bank of America hopes to expand UNC Charlotte's signature bridge program for historically underrepresented students and support the creation of a Community Innovation Incubator by investing $2.5 million. According to WBTV, "the University Transition Opportunities Program will expand UNC Charlotte's signature bridge program by an additional 300 students over a five-year period." This $2.5 million investment "aligns with many key and critical components of the university's recently launched 10-year strategic plan to "shape what's next" through research, teaching, leadership, and diversity and inclusion." (WBTV)
- Dumpster Dads Charlotte NC offers affordable, reliable and consistent dumpster rental service in this city and neighboring areas. It says it is an alternative for waste disposal for different construction and home improvement projects. This company has become the preferred provider of dumpster rentals in the area for offering reliable dumpster rentals for homeowners, investors and business owners. (Digital Journal)
- Earlier this week, Mangasha Dion Clark, Jr. pleaded guilty to his role in the January 2017 murder of 14-year-old Anthony Frazier in Charlotte. He is guilty of second-degree murder. Judge W. Robert Bell sentenced Clark to 150 to 192 months in prison. (WBTV)

Are you a Charlotte resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?
Bloomberg recently asked experts where they'd invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.
Thinking you can't afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.
Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here's why:
- Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
- Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
- Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)
