'We are significantly far behind': Durham County EMS remains understaffed and under resourced, director says (cbs17.com) β€” Durham County EMS leaders say they're still severely understaffed and sometimes have no ambulances available, even after a recent scare when a football player was injured at a Durham school. With only 19 peak ambulances but a need for about 32, the county is adding positions, one new truck, and a three-tier response model, though full improvements may take years.

Durham County leaders weigh data center moratorium with exemptions through 2027 (abc11.com) β€” Durham County commissioners are considering a moratorium on large data centers through May 2027, drawing big crowds and sharp debate over pollution, water use, and economic impacts. The pause would mainly affect projects over 100,000 square feet, including around Research Triangle Park, while the county studies regulations. Student taken into custody after bringing weapon to Southern High School in Durham (wral.com) β€” A student was detained after deputies confiscated a weapon at Southern High School in Durham on Tuesday morning, briefly putting the campus on lockdown. Durham Public Schools say the lockdown lasted about 30 minutes, no one was hurt, and classes resumed on only the second day of school. Officials have not released the student's age or whether charges are expected.

A New Multidisciplinary Space in Durham Channels the Supportive Spirit of The Carrack (indyweek.com) β€” A new arts hub called Boardinghouse Arts is opening this September on West Trinity Avenue, aiming to become a major gathering place for Durham's creative community. Founded by longtime Durham arts leaders Laura Ritchie and Shirlette Ammons, the three-story space will host a gallery, recording studio, artist studios, and exhibits featuring many familiar Carrack artists while adapting to today's Durham.
