Man dies, two injured in Durham crash on Umstead Road; SUV went airborne at 'high rate of speed': Police (cbs17.com) — A 30-year-old Durham man died and two passengers were injured when an SUV speeding along Umstead Road in northern Durham went airborne, hit a tree, and then a telephone pole early Saturday. Neighbors say the winding, deer-filled road is dangerous, and police are still investigating while asking anyone with information to contact a Durham investigator.
2. Judge denies bond for man accused of killing Apex teacher, basketball coach (wral.com subscription) — Friends and family of Sheremy Dillard, an Apex teacher and basketball coach with deep Durham roots, gathered in Durham for her viewing as the man accused of killing her was denied bond in Wake County court. A celebration of her life is planned at Durham's Hillside High School, where she once walked the halls as a student and athlete.
3. NC Nepalese community rallies after deadly Nepal-Tibet border flood (abc11.com) — Durham's Nepalese community is coming together to mourn and raise money after a devastating glacier-triggered flood and landslide on the Nepal-Tibet border left hundreds dead and many more missing. Local leaders with the Nepal Center of North Carolina are centralizing donations to send directly to Nepal's Prime Minister's Relief Fund, while families here anxiously await word from loved ones overseas.
4. 11 Strikeout Night from Boyle Leads Bulls to 4-0 Win (mlb.com) — Durham Bulls fans saw pitcher Joe Boyle strike out 11 batters over 5 2/3 innings in a 4-0 shutout of the Norfolk Tides at the DBAP, the team's second straight shutout. Xavier Isaac collected three hits and scored twice as Durham moved closer to first place, with Jake Woodford slated to start Sunday's series finale.
