Developer proposes 321 apartments and townhomes on Durham's Roxboro Road (newsobserver.com) — A South Carolina developer wants to build 321 apartments and townhomes off North Roxboro Street and Infinity Road in northern Durham, and neighbors are already worried about traffic, emergency response times, and storm impacts. NorthPoint Durham must hold neighborhood meetings, including a virtual session Tuesday evening, before the project moves through the city-county approval process and on to the Durham Planning Commission.
2. Atlanta Developer Plans $343M Mixed-Use Project In Downtown Durham (bisnow.com) — A $343 million mixed-use project called Tribute Rising is set to transform the Hayti community in downtown Durham, replacing the former Forest Hills Heights public housing with nearly 1,000 apartments and new commercial space. Phase 1, finishing in 2028, will deliver 332 units, including 139 affordable and 55 senior-only apartments, plus new homes for Black Farmers Market and Kate's Korner. Funding includes major support from the Durham Housing Authority.
3. New Durham School of the Arts expected to open in fall of 2028; campus 60% finished (cbs17.com) — Durham families can expect the new $200 million Durham School of the Arts campus on Stadium Drive to open in fall 2028, with construction now about 60% complete. The larger, modern facility will replace the aging downtown campus, add arts-focused spaces, and help ease traffic and crowding while officials maintain the current building is still safe for students.
4. Baby goats with rabies may have been in Durham County, public health officials say (cbs17.com) — Durham County health officials are warning that baby goats with confirmed rabies may have been at two private petting-zoo events in the county on August 16 and 23, potentially exposing dozens of people. The infected animals from Farm Adventures Mobile Petting Zoo have been euthanized, and state officials urge anyone who visited the traveling zoo between July 28 and August 27 to contact their local health department.
5. New Dean Positions for Three Black Administrators in Student Affairs (jbhe.com) — Duke University administrator Dawna Jones has been promoted to associate vice president for student affairs and dean of students, continuing her rise after leading several key campus identity and culture centers in Durham. The piece also highlights new student affairs leadership roles for Black administrators at the University of Miami School of Law and SUNY Westchester Community College, underscoring broader shifts in higher education leadership.
