Deadly Durham shooting triggers raid with 8 arrests, haul of 5 stolen guns among 9 seized firearms: Police (cbs17.com) — Durham police carried out a raid on South Roxboro Street after a recent homicide and other shootings, arresting eight people and seizing nine guns, including five reported stolen. Officers also confiscated cocaine, marijuana, ammunition, and firearm accessories, saying the operation was aimed at addressing immediate crime problems and preventing future violence in the neighborhood. Charges range from drug offenses to firearm and conspiracy counts.
2. Firefighters extinguish closet fire in Durham residence (abc11.com) — Emergency crews in Durham quickly contained a Saturday morning house fire on Spring Street after smoke was spotted coming from a single-family home believed to be unoccupied. About 38 firefighters, along with Durham County EMS and Durham police, responded, and no injuries were reported. The cause of the closet fire is still under investigation.
3. 'Kids aren't even scared to hear gunshots': Durham kids say they are fed up with gun violence (myfox8.com) — Durham youth sat down with Mayor Leo Williams to demand action on the gun violence they say has become a normal part of their lives. Teens shared harrowing experiences with shootings and pressed city leaders and community members to get more involved, with plans for a larger youth summit in Durham still to be scheduled.
4. NC teen's fatal cardiac arrest tragedy renews conversation about AEDs in schools (wral.com) — A new North Carolina rule now requires every public school to keep an AED in a clearly marked spot reachable within three minutes, a change underscored by a Guilford County teen's fatal cardiac arrest. With Durham County EMS already seeing record call volumes, officials stress that fast bystander CPR and nearby AEDs can be lifesaving while residents wait for ambulances.
5. 6,000+ customers without power in Raleigh, Durham areas as storms hit central NC (cbs17.com) — Storms moving through central North Carolina knocked out power for thousands, including about 1,600 customers in Durham near South Roxboro Street and Hope Valley Road. A larger outage also stretched from eastern Durham County toward Raleigh along U.S. 70 and Brier Creek. Earlier severe thunderstorms brought hail and warnings across northern Wake and Durham counties.
