Today's riddle: Why did the cookie go to the hospital? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Driving You Crazy: Durham dad seeks safer walk to school for children (cbs17.com) — A Durham father is urging the city to make the Old Chapel Hill Road bridge over New Hope Creek safer for students walking to Sherwood Githens Middle School. He's launched Finishthebridge.org, asking for protective posts between traffic and the bike-pedestrian lane as Durham prioritizes projects for the next budget year. Until changes come, he's pleading with drivers to slow down and stay off their phones.
2. I-Team: Durham fire victims, families raise concerns about property conditions (abc11.com) — Durham residents displaced by a deadly fire that killed firefighter Andrew Brokes are raising alarms about what they describe as unsafe living conditions at the property, including missing smoke detectors and poor ventilation. County tax and zoning records list the buildings as commercial or converted dwellings, even though families were living in all three structures. With 14 people now homeless and the building unstable, the Red Cross is helping while investigators keep residents from retrieving vital documents.
3. Spence prepares to restore 'magic' to historic Ross layout in Durham (triadgolf.com) — Hope Valley Country Club in southwest Durham is set for a major Donald Ross restoration led by architect Kris Spence, with work beginning in January and reopening expected in fall 2027. The project will rebuild greens, restore classic bunkers, reestablish a famous creek on No. 11, and upgrade turf, irrigation, and drainage, aiming to recapture the course's original character for local golfers and neighbors.
4. NC School of Science and Math didn't get 'nerd' world record, but set a food-drive one instead (abc11.com) — Students at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham turned a playful attempt at a "nerd" world record into a massive 24-hour food drive that still holds a Guinness record. Their effort, which collected over 559,000 pounds of food for the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, is being highlighted as ABC11 gears up for its 40th annual food drive and encourages Durham residents to donate.
5. 7 Endangered Red Wolves to Travel from Durham to Wolf Conservation Center in South Salem (yonkerstimes.com) — Seven endangered red wolves currently living at Durham's Museum of Life and Science will soon be transported to the Wolf Conservation Center in South Salem, New York. The nonprofit Pilots To The Rescue will fly them from Raleigh Regional Airport in Person County to New Jersey, then on to their new home. The move aims to give the wolves better long-term care and conservation support.
