1. Violent crimes drop in Fayetteville; here's what police say is working (abc11.com) — Fayetteville police report a sharp drop in violent crime this year, including a 54% decrease in homicides and a 23% decline in property crimes, helped by license plate readers and other technology. Local nonprofits like Greater Life of Fayetteville are partnering with officers to reach at-risk youth, though leaders stress continued community involvement is crucial to keep trends moving in the right direction.
2. Fayetteville considers higher parking, citation fees to reduce taxpayer costs (cbs17.com) — Downtown Fayetteville drivers could soon pay more for parking and citations as city leaders look to cut the $1 million annual cost of the parking program without raising property taxes. Council will review a new parking management contract and possible fee changes next week, which could shift more of the burden from taxpayers to users of downtown decks and on-street spaces.
3. Fayetteville moves ahead with reconstruction of Fire Station No. 4 (ncconstructionnews.com) — Fayetteville is moving forward with demolishing and rebuilding Fire Station No. 4 on Bragg Boulevard, aiming to improve response times for about 5,000 nearby homes. After construction problems and a lawsuit with the original contractor, the city has hired Cumming Group to manage the project and will soon select a new builder, while the existing station and other resources continue providing fire coverage.
4. Residents spoke out on data centers. Here's what Cumberland County heard. (fayobserver.com) — Cumberland County officials are drafting new rules for data centers after residents raised concerns about water use, noise, lighting, and impacts on rural land. A draft ordinance will be discussed at Coffee with the Commissioners on October 15 and at a November public hearing, giving Fayetteville-area residents several chances to weigh in on how and where these facilities are allowed.
5. Fayetteville Technical Community College and the North Carolina Military Business Center announce executive leadership transition (bizfayetteville.com) — Fayetteville Technical Community College is announcing a leadership transition at the North Carolina Military Business Center, with founder Scott Dorney handing the executive director role to Fayetteville native Martin "Jimmy" Hendrix on Oct. 1. The change comes after two decades of helping North Carolina firms win billions in federal contracts, with both leaders emphasizing continued support for military communities and the state's defense-driven economy.
