Local readers will recognize South Point's recent golf titles, the Hoover sisters' roles in Gastonia-area softball, and educator-coach Steve Hudgins' decades shaping youth sports across Gaston County.
• New Trump-rumors are spreading online - and the furious response from The White House only makes things worse (dagens.com) — Trump's recent campaign swing through Gastonia to support GOP Senate hopeful Michael Whatley is drawing extra attention because of renewed online speculation about a box-shaped bulge under his jacket. The White House angrily dismissed the rumors without explaining the outline, while commentators continue debating Trump's health based only on photos and video.
• "Radical" Vice President Vance criticizes former Governor Roy Cooper at GOP rally (wxii12.com) — North Carolina's high-stakes U.S. Senate race touched Gastonia recently, when Donald Trump campaigned there for Republican Michael Whatley and attacked Democrat Roy Cooper's record on public safety. Vice President JD Vance continued that line in Greensboro, sharply criticizing Cooper on crime, voter ID, and transgender issues as both parties court voters ahead of November's midterms.
