Today's riddle: Why did the man leave his watch in the bank? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Pitt County adds new technology to improve 911 calls (witn.com) — Pitt County 911, based in Greenville, has rolled out new technology that automatically translates Spanish text messages and lets dispatchers start live video calls during emergencies. Local resident Isabella Garcia says the tools could greatly help family members with limited English and make it easier for Greenville callers to show exactly what's happening so responders arrive better prepared.
2. Hayden Panettiere Received 'Warning' From Doctors Before Her Death (kansascity.com) — Hayden Panettiere was found unresponsive in Greenville on Sunday afternoon and was pronounced dead at the scene, with local police and the county coroner investigating. Authorities say there are no immediate signs of foul play, and an official cause of death has not yet been determined as they continue gathering information today.
3. Greenville firefighter cooks meals for people in need (witn.com) — A Greenville Fire/Rescue firefighter spent the day grilling about 300 hot dogs and hamburgers outside the Greenville Community Shelter, handing out food, water, and chips to people in need during the heat. Inspired by a Bible verse about sharing, Dylan Harris hopes his simple act of service will encourage other Greenville residents to look for small ways to help neighbors.
4. NC Lottery Pick 3 Day, Pick 3 Evening results for Aug. 16, 2026 (shelbystar.com) — If you played the NC Lottery on August 16, you can now check the winning Pick 3, Pick 4, Cash 5, Double Play, and Millionaire for Life numbers. Winners in and around Greenville can claim prizes up to $99,999 at the Dickinson Avenue regional office during weekday business hours.
5. Business owner donates company to trust for charity (thirteen.org) — A longtime Greenville business leader, Eddie Smith of Grady-White Boats, has placed his Greenville-based company into a perpetual purpose trust so that more than 90% of future profits will go to charity. The move secures local jobs while directing funds to education, health care, conservation, and underserved communities across Eastern North Carolina, and Smith hopes it inspires other business owners to rethink their wealth.
