County health officials urge residents to avoid unfamiliar animals, keep pets' vaccinations up to date, and call their doctor or Pitt County Health Department immediately if bitten or exposed to possibly infected saliva.

2. Greenville PZ commission recommends rezoning despite neighbors' concerns (reflector.com) — Greenville's Planning and Zoning Commission has unanimously recommended rezoning nearly 196 acres off Stantonsburg Road to allow 550–575 new homes and future annexation into the city, despite strong objections from nearby Candlewick residents. Neighbors worry about drainage, flooding, traffic, and property values, while developers say city stormwater rules and sewer capacity will address concerns. City Council will decide on Oct. 8.

3. ECU baseball coach Cliff Godwin takes immediate leave of absence (wcti12.com) — East Carolina University's head baseball coach Cliff Godwin, based in Greenville, is taking an immediate leave of absence to address personal matters, with no timetable for return.
