• N.C. Ferry Division to begin series of tolling listening sessions in September (islandfreepress.org) — New tolls are coming to the Hatteras–Ocracoke ferry by January 1, 2027, and NCDOT is holding a listening session at the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in Hatteras on September 8. Residents can drop in, ask questions, and share feedback in person, online, or by phone through September 14 before toll details are finalized.

• Buxton groin repair begins with sheet pile removal (islandfreepress.org) — Major repair work is underway on the Buxton groin at Cape Hatteras, a key structure meant to help hold sand near the former lighthouse site and Buxton Beach Access. Expect a 300-foot beach closure on each side of the groin while crews replace sheet piles and add armor stone through late 2026, coordinated with ongoing beach nourishment.
