• N.C. ferry toll recommendations headed to Board of Transportation on Thursday (islandfreepress.org) — Hatteras residents face a major change as NCDOT moves toward adding tolls to the historically free Hatteras–Ocracoke vehicle ferry starting January 1, 2027. Recommended rates and methodology go to the Board of Transportation this Thursday, following local listening sessions in Hatteras and Ocracoke, while coastal counties push for exemptions and Ocracoke residents fight to preserve priority boarding.
• Outer Banks Travel Surges Back as Storm-Battered N.C. 12 Reopens for Hatteras Visitors (travelandtourworld.com) — Drivers to and from Hatteras can once again use N.C. 12 after emergency crews rebuilt a storm-damaged stretch near Pea Island and fully reopened two-way traffic on October 3. The restored highway reconnects Rodanthe through Hatteras and Cape Hatteras National Seashore, though travellers are urged to drive cautiously, watch for soft shoulders, and keep checking DriveNC and park alerts for changing conditions.
• Nearly 500 new patients turn to Beach Pharmacy during N.C. 12 closure (islandfreepress.org) — When N.C. 12 washed out and stranded people on Hatteras Island, Beach Pharmacy in Avon stayed open late and through the weekend so nearly 500 new patients could get critical medications. Staff, visiting pharmacists, and local doctors teamed up to manage shortages and calm fears, showing how island healthcare adapts when storms disrupt travel and vacation plans.
