Charlotte Pedestrian Killed In Rainy Early Morning Crash

A woman was killed around 4 a.m. on S. Tryon Street in Charlotte as she attempted to cross the road in the rain, police said.

CHARLOTTE, NC — A woman was struck and killed by a car early Monday morning as she attempted to cross a major thoroughfare in southwest Charlotte, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.

The Feb 26 accident occurred around 4 a.m. when the woman was hit by a 2002 Toyota Celica in the 13200 block of S. Tryon Street near Steelecroft Parkway as she stood in the roadway. She was pronounced dead on the scene.

Matthew Jefferson Owens, the driver of the Toyota, remained at the accident scene, and neither alcohol nor speeding are suspecting as contributing factors in the crash, CMPD said in a report.

“The pedestrian was not in a crosswalk and was wearing dark colored clothing,” CMPD said. “It was raining lightly at the time of the crash.”

Monday’s accident is one of a deadly string of crashes that have claimed pedestrian lives in recent months. Last year, 28 pedestrians were killed by cars, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department data. Statewide, about 3,000 pedestrians and 850 bicyclists were hit by cars in 2017, according to CMPD.
