1. Bears unveiled at Patriot Square dedication (newbernsj.com) — Patriot Square beside New Bern City Hall now features two new bear statues, "Daughter of Freedom" and "Private Resolve," unveiled by local DAR and SAR chapters. Painted by New Bern artist Ashley McDaniel and funded largely through community brick purchases, the project honors the 1774 New Bern Resolves, with a bronze plaque dedication planned for December 15.
   

2. First-day excitement fills Bangert Elementary as Craven County students return (wcti12.com) — Students and families filled Bangert Elementary in New Bern on Monday as Craven County schools opened their doors for a new year, with many kids even eager enough to show up a day early. The neighborhood school's new principal, Dr. Alexis McKeel, welcomed walkers, bikers, and car riders alike, describing the first day as feeling like Christmas morning all over again.
   

3. Craven man wins $100K Powerball prize off a $3 ticket (newbernsj.com) — A New Bern resident, Robert Scott Bascom-Cohane, recently discovered he'd won a $100,000 Powerball prize from a $3 ticket, taking home just over $72,000 after taxes. Living in New Bern with his husband, he plans to use the money for home improvements, bills, and travel, while lottery proceeds continue to send millions to Craven County education programs.
   

4. Princeton Engineering - Roy Jackson, titan of fluid mechanics, dies at 94 (princeton.edu) — A renowned Princeton engineering professor, Roy Jackson, chose New Bern as his retirement home, spending his later years sailing, painting, and teaching his grandchildren here. The pioneering chemical engineer, whose work reshaped industrial fluid mechanics worldwide, died July 20 at age 94. His life's story spans from RAF instructor to Royal Society fellow and beloved mentor.
