1. New Bern eager to welcome visitors and residents alike for this year's Mumfest (witn.com) — Downtown New Bern is gearing up to host Mumfest on October 10–11, filling the historic district with live music, food, shopping, and family activities. More than 250 vendors, multiple bands, BMX stunts, and even a dog performance team will turn the riverfront into a busy showcase of what New Bern's community and businesses have to offer.
2. CARTS to streamline fixed routes Oct. 1 with hourly pickups and fewer stops (wcti12.com) — New Bern riders will see big changes to CARTS service starting Thursday, with fixed routes shifting to hourly pickups, fewer stops, and a new stop at New Bern Mall. A new OnDemand+ same-day ride option will also launch across much of town, offering flexible trips from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for $5 per ride.
3. New Bern Crop Hunger Walk draws about 400 participants at Union Point Park (wcti12.com) — Union Point Park in New Bern drew about 400 people Sunday for the Crop Hunger Walk, where residents walked up to 3.1 miles to support local food and shelter programs. Organized by Religious Community Services and partners, the event helps fund New Bern's food pantry, daily meal service, and homeless shelter at a time when many neighbors are struggling.
4. Federal case against former FBI Director James Comey in New Bern delayed until next year (publicradioeast.org) — A high-profile federal case against former FBI Director James Comey, being handled in New Bern, has been pushed back, with his arraignment moved from September 30 to January and trial now expected in February 2027. A U.S. District Judge granted the delay so the defense can prepare after filing motions to dismiss charges tied to a controversial social media post.
5. Carteret hires Reynal, Ferguson to succeed Griffin (newbernsj.com) — Carteret County has tapped attorney Trey Ferguson as its new county attorney, while he continues serving as alderman for New Bern's Ward 1. Residents may see his regional influence grow as he advises Carteret leaders on legal matters, even as he remains involved in New Bern city issues and statewide municipal policy work.
