Driver Of Stolen Motorcycle Killed In Midday Crash

The driver of the motorcycle, which was reported stolen earlier in the day, was speeding and lost control before hitting trees, CMPD said.

CHARLOTTE, NC — A driver of a stolen motorcycle was killed Wednesday after he lost control while speeding around a slower vehicle, Charlotte police said.

The midday crash in northwest Charlotte occurred less than three hours after the 2009 Honda CBR600 motorcycle had been reported stolen. “It is unknown if the driver stole the motorcycle or received it from another person,” CMPD said.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, officers found 18-year-old Daniel Hugh Dockery II along with the motorcycle shortly after noon in the front yard of a home in the 1700 block of Oakdale Road in Charlotte. Dockery, who was unresponsive, was later pronounced dead at 12:29 p.m.

CMPD investigators at the scene determined that Dockery was speeding when he attempted to pass a slower moving car in a no-passing zone when he lost control and ran off the road. He traveled through several yards before hitting two trees, a CMPD report said.

Dockery was wearing a helmet when he was ejected, however his North Carolina drivers license did not include a motorcycle endorsement, police said.

This crash remains under investigations and CMPD asks that any witnesses call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or Detective Steve Williams at 704-432-2169.
