12-Year-Old Boy Shot Waiting For The Bus In North Charlotte

A child was shot in North Charlotte Thursday morning and sent to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries, according to a report.

CHARLOTTE, NC — A 12-year-old boy was shot in the leg as he waited for his school bus Thursday morning when a suspect opened fire at a group of people standing outside a motel in north Charlotte.

The shooting occurred in the 1200 block of W. Sugar Creek Road near Reagan Drive, around 7:30 a.m. and was witnessed by a Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Deputy driving in the area, according to police reports.

As the deputy approached the gunman, the suspect jumped into the passenger seat of a waiting vehicle, which then sped off from the scene. As the deputy followed in pursuit, the suspect then turned his gun at the officer, firing at him from the moving car. Neither the officer, nor his patrol car, were hit in the gunfire.

The police chase continued on Interstate-85 south, and as the deputy exited onto Brookshire Boulevard, he spotted the getaway car near Linwood Avenue. It's doors had been left open by the suspects who had fled on foot.

As law enforcement searched the area for the suspects, a tip came in from a community member that led officers to locate one of the suspects. The suspect attempted to evade the officers, prompting a foot chase. He was apprehended at North Hoskins Road and Woodman Avenue, and the weapon believed to be used in the shooting was located, according to a police report.

The second suspect, however, has not yet been located.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, the boy was taken to an area hospital for treatment for the non life-threatening injury.
