• Ocracoke Red Drum Shootout returns Oct. 2-3 with expanded community mission (islandfreepress.org) — Ocracoke residents can look forward to the Oct. 2–3 Red Drum Shootout, a growing fishing tournament that now also supports the island's lunch program and historic British Cemetery. With room for up to 100 boats, the event at Berkley Barn will feature competitive fishing, live music, food, auctions, and volunteer opportunities to strengthen community services.
• If you lost your priority pass, would you have to move off Ocracoke? Take our survey (ocracokeobserver.com) — Ocracoke residents are being asked how losing their Hatteras–Ocracoke ferry priority pass might affect whether they can realistically stay on the island. The short survey invites you to share whether travel difficulties could force your household to consider moving, and to explain how such a change would impact your daily life and family needs.
• Hyde County launches ferry toll resource website (ocracokeobserver.com) — Hyde County has launched a dedicated website to help Ocracoke residents respond to new state-mandated ferry tolls and the possible loss of priority boarding on the Hatteras–Ocracoke route. The site explains recent resolutions, links to state leaders, and shares a petition urging lawmakers to preserve priority passes and protect the island's essential transportation lifeline.
