📰 News we're reading

• UNCP lands nearly $5M to advance AI, transform student success (robesonian.com) — UNC Pembroke has secured nearly $5 million to build a human-centered AI system that will reshape advising, tutoring, and gateway courses for local students while creating an AI Innovation Lab in Thomas Hall. The five-year project, developed with Robeson Community College, aims to catch struggling students earlier, smooth transfer pathways, and prepare graduates in Pembroke and southeastern North Carolina for high-demand, tech-driven careers without leaving the region.

• UNCP soccer battles to draw against Barton (robesonian.com) — UNC Pembroke's women's soccer team battled Barton to a 1-1 draw at LREMC Stadium in Pembroke, staying unbeaten in the series and setting up a big Youth Night home match Wednesday at 6 p.m. Despite outshooting Barton 19-8 and leading on a Jahniyah Augustus header, the Braves conceded a second-half equalizer but remain undefeated in conference play.

• NCDPI's Innovation Leadership Council Met for Inaugural Convening (nc.gov) — North Carolina's new Innovation Leadership Council has begun work on finding and scaling effective teaching ideas statewide, and one member represents the University of North Carolina at Pembroke's New Teacher Support Program. For Pembroke-area educators, this means local voices will help shape how promising classroom practices are identified, evaluated, and shared, potentially influencing training and support for teachers serving the Sandhills region.
