NCDOT proposes closing a busy railroad crossing in West Raleigh for good (newsobserver.com) — Drivers in West Raleigh could permanently lose the Beryl Road railroad crossing near Meredith College as NCDOT proposes rerouting traffic to a new connection at Royal Street for safety reasons. The plan would remove the Hillsborough Street signal at Beryl, add a new light at Royal, take two nearby businesses, and is open for public comment at a meeting on Thursday, Aug. 27.

No Mall, No Arcade, No Space: The Search For Teen Autonomy In The Wake Of Triangle Takeover Events (caro.news subscription) — Raleigh is grappling with July 4 teen takeover events that left nine people shot and thousands of youths crowding Brier Creek and Glenwood South, prompting calls for a curfew and deeper solutions. City leaders and experts highlight shrinking "third spaces" for teens and spotlight Raleigh Teen Connect as one way to offer safe, free hangout options while broader strategies are debated.
   

3. WRAL Investigates: WakeMed eyes $919 million expansion as Atrium deal faces uncertain future (wral.com) — WakeMed is seeking state approval for a $919 million expansion that includes adding beds at its Raleigh and Cary campuses and building new hospitals in Rolesville and Wendell, potentially reshaping care access in Wake County. At the same time, its proposed merger with Atrium Health faces intense scrutiny from residents, county commissioners, and Gov. Josh Stein, who worry about costs and competition.
   

4. Astronaut Christina Koch returns to NC State, months after record-breaking Artemis II mission (cbs17.com) — Astronaut Christina Koch returned to NC State's Raleigh campus Monday for a homecoming event celebrating her record-breaking Artemis II mission and long ISS stay. Speaking to students and alumni, she shared how her journey began on Stinson Drive, as the university renamed Engineering Building II as Koch Hall to honor her achievements and inspire future engineers.
   

5. Simpson set to retire after heart scare (two decks) (messengernews.net) — A world champion runner suffered cardiac arrest while pacing a girls' mile race in Raleigh this June, and doctors have now diagnosed her with a rare heart condition that ends her competitive career. Jenny Simpson, 39, says she's grateful to be alive after CPR and a defibrillator at the Raleigh track helped save her life, and she's now focused on life beyond elite running.
