Long-term closure of Raleigh's Lake Wheeler Road begins after Labor Day (newsobserver.com) — Lake Wheeler Road through Dix Park in Raleigh will close to through traffic starting Tuesday, Sept. 8, and is expected to stay closed until summer 2028, while crews add sidewalks, crosswalks, and roundabouts. Local access to the State Farmers Market and Dix Park entrances at Goode Street and Umstead Drive will remain, but some GoRaleigh bus stops on Daladams and Fuller streets will be shut during construction.
2. Why Raleigh is starting weekly yard waste pick-up & ditching loose-leaf program (newsobserver.com) — Raleigh is switching from its long-criticized loose-leaf curb pickup to weekly collection of yard waste in lime green bins starting Monday, Sept. 8, with your regular trash day staying the same. City leaders say the change should reduce clogged storm drains, free up crews for other work, and encourage residents to mulch or bag leaves instead of piling them along the street.
3. 9 North Carolina Sunflower Fields That Are Almost Too Pretty To Miss This Year (takingthekids.com) — Raleigh residents can enjoy a free, massive sunflower field at Dix Park, with easy paths, skyline views, and dog-friendly walks during peak bloom. The guide also highlights several other sunflower farms within a reasonable drive of Raleigh, many offering U-pick flowers, family activities, hayrides, and farm stores. It encourages checking each location's current bloom status before heading out.
4. Raleigh pet sitter accused of leaving dog in a cage in the heat (cbs17.com) — A Wake County judge has barred a Raleigh man from owning pets, except his backyard chickens, after he was charged with felony animal cruelty in the death of a French bulldog left in a hot cage. The case, tied to a booking through the Rover pet-sitting platform, remains pending as the company says it has deactivated his account and is cooperating with investigators.
5. International youth soccer tournament opens in Raleigh amid Labor Day heat (abc11.com) — Raleigh is hosting the IberCup x ECNL International Soccer Tournament this Labor Day weekend, drawing more than 160 youth teams from six continents to local fields. With dangerous heat in the forecast, organizers and NCFC coaches are shortening shifts, pushing some games later, and stressing hydration so 10- and 11-year-old players can still safely enjoy the rare chance to face global competition.
