📰 News we're reading

1. How one city is trying to cool down (pbsnc.org) — Raleigh is testing a titanium dioxide pavement treatment on selected streets to extend road life and reduce dangerous urban heat for people walking or driving nearby. City engineers and local researchers have installed dozens of sensors around treated and untreated roads to track how much these "cool pavements" lower temperatures and potentially cut pollution from traffic and microplastics.

2. Now when you buy an NC train ticket, the bus ride to or from the station is free (newsobserver.com) — If you're catching an NC By Train Carolinian or Piedmont between Raleigh and Charlotte, you can now add a free local bus ride at the start or end of your trip. The new Ride & Rail pass works with GoRaleigh, GoTriangle and most other systems, making it easier to reach stations without driving or paying extra fares.

3. A new program could help Triangle residents save on utility bills. The details (newsobserver.com) — Raleigh homeowners will soon be able to get free, one-on-one guidance on cutting energy bills through the new Electrify the Triangle program launching Oct. 9. The service connects residents with home energy navigators, vetted local contractors, and information on rebates and loans for heat pumps, insulation, EV chargers, and more, aiming to make upgrades affordable and straightforward across the Triangle.

4. Girl Scouts debuting 2 new cookies. Here are the flavors and when you can try (heraldsun.com) — Raleigh-area residents can start ordering two new Girl Scout cookie flavors online beginning Jan. 12, 2027, including allergy-friendly Sparkables and Patch Pals dog treats. The local cookie season for the Triangle runs Jan. 6 through March 14, with sales supporting activities for girls across Wake and neighboring counties in the North Carolina Coastal Pines council.
