(johnstoniannews.com) — Smithfield residents may be interested to know that Johnston County Register of Deeds Craig Olive, whose office serves locals daily, has earned the statewide Shining Star Award for going beyond the call of duty. Colleagues praised his budget savings, technology upgrades, identity-theft protections, community shred events, veteran recognition program, and long record of service on local boards and initiatives.
   

• Nine Trails Featured In 2026 Johnston County Hiking Challenge (jocoreport.com) — Smithfield walkers can join the JoCo Fall Hiking Challenge by tackling the 2.94-mile Buffalo Creek Greenway, one of nine featured Johnston County trails. Running Oct. 1 through Dec. 31 with no registration or fees, the challenge encourages residents to explore local parks, earn prize entries for each hike completed, and learn how to support future trail projects.
   

• Lower Speed Limit Planned For Portion Of U.S. 301 In Selma (jocoreport.com) — If you regularly drive US 301 between Selma and Smithfield, expect a likely speed limit drop from 45 to 35 mph between Ricks Road and the Smithfield town line later this fall. Selma's council has asked NCDOT for the change, citing heavier pedestrian, bicycle, and business traffic, and the state board is slated to consider it in October.
