• Are accidental needle sticks a growing menace? (thesylvaherald.com) — Jackson County leaders are debating how serious discarded syringe and accidental needle-stick problems really are in and around Sylva, including East Sylva Shopping Center. Health officials say true needle-stick incidents are rare and poorly tracked, while town staff and Sylva Police report few issues but still carry sharps containers. A weekly WNCAP harm-reduction van continues serving residents at Blue Ridge Behavioral Health on Bonnie Lane.
   

• MLB season comes to a close for local stars (thesylvaherald.com) — Two Smoky Mountain High School alumni, pitcher Zebby Matthews of the Twins and catcher Cal Raleigh of the Mariners, wrapped up uneven MLB seasons as their teams missed the playoffs.
