1. Wilmington man charged with murder and robbery (starnewsonline.com subscription) — A Wilmington man has been charged with first-degree murder and robbery in connection with a Sept. 8 killing, and is being held in New Hanover County jail without bond. Court records show he was on supervised probation and has already appeared in New Hanover District Court, while Wilmington police say more details will be released once detectives clear the case.
2. NCDOT buys portions of properties for Eastwood Overpass Project (wwaytv3.com) — Plans for a new overpass at Eastwood and Military Cutoff are moving ahead in Wilmington, with NCDOT using eminent domain to acquire parts of nearby properties. While officials say no buildings will be demolished, residents and businesses worry about years of construction, parking disruptions, and a 30‑foot structure near homes as utility work begins before full construction in 2027.
3. New Hanover Schools superintendent details cleanup plan after mold found at Hoggard (wwaytv3.com) — Hoggard High School in Wilmington is dealing with a costly mold cleanup that has closed several key areas, including the band room, NJROTC wing, cafeteria, and classrooms. The superintendent outlined short- and long-term HVAC and humidity fixes, some dependent on a proposed November school bond, while parents voiced health concerns and asked how the district will prevent future problems.
4. A new Wilmington taproom doubles as a museum of local film history (starnewsonline.com subscription) — A new taproom and "brewseum" on Market Street is giving Wilmington residents a place to grab a drink while exploring memorabilia from locally filmed shows and movies. Hollywood East Brewseum showcases props, costumes, and rotating exhibits from Wilmington's film industry, and plans to add movie trivia nights and screenings soon.
5. NCDEQ seeking public feedback on flood plans for Cape Fear and White Oak river basins (foxwilmington.com) — State officials are asking Cape Fear River basin residents, including those in Wilmington, to weigh in on new draft flood resilience plans that could shape future protections and funding. You can join a virtual information session on Oct. 6 or submit comments online or by email through Oct. 9, before the plans head to the General Assembly.
