1. Scare Faire & Halloween Market to bring vendors, activities to Wilmington (foxwilmington.com) — Families in Wilmington can look forward to the Scare Faire & Halloween Market at the Elks Lodge on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 2 to 8 p.m. The $5 event (free for kids 12 and under) will feature local vendors, indoor trick-or-treating, crafts, tarot readings, and food trucks for a full afternoon and evening of Halloween fun.
2. NC Ports seeks pause on Wilmington Harbor expansion amid environmental concerns (wwaytv3.com) — NC Ports is asking the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to pause the proposed Wilmington Harbor expansion so potential environmental impacts, including PFAS concerns, can be studied more thoroughly. The authority says the project could bring economic benefits but wants future decisions guided by sound science and community questions before moving forward.
3. Living Hope responds to anonymous letter after dropping Dock Street location (wwaytv3.com) — Living Hope Day Center has confirmed it won't move into the former Sorrow Drowner Tiki Bar at 10th and Dock streets in Wilmington, despite an anonymous letter criticizing the plan. After hearing concerns from neighbors, school officials, and residents at a Sept. 22 City Council meeting, the nonprofit says it's seeking a new permanent home that won't subject its homeless clients to extra scrutiny.
4. "I just have to get a lot of North Carolina stories out of my system": Wilmington director Parrish Stikeleather (whqr.org) — A Wilmington-based filmmaker, Parrish Stikeleather, is building his career telling North Carolina stories through award-winning short films and his debut feature, Long Drive to Yadkin. His work is rooted in local relationships and everyday life, and his arts reporting is supported in part by the Arts Council of Wilmington and The Endowment, highlighting ongoing investment in the city's creative community.
5. Art in the Arboretum marks 30th year in New Hanover County (foxwilmington.com) — Wilmington residents can look forward to the 30th annual Art in the Arboretum at the New Hanover County Arboretum on Oct. 11–12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The outdoor show will feature local artists, youth artwork from Dreams and Kids Making It, food trucks, and hands-on activities led by NHC 4-H Youth Development, with rain dates set for Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.
