Wake Forest's new president begins tenure as university expands its footprint and affordability efforts (wschronicle.com) — Wake Forest's new president is steering major changes that will reshape how the university connects with Winston-Salem, from The Grounds development near Deacon Boulevard to new pedestrian links across University Parkway. A generous North Carolina-focused aid program will cover full tuition, and in some cases living costs, for many in-state families, potentially opening Wake Forest's doors wider to local students.
2. Crisis Control pharmacy filled 20,207 prescriptions in 2025 as $100,000 match targets medication access (wschronicle.com) — If you're struggling to afford prescriptions in Winston-Salem, Crisis Control Ministry's free pharmacy on East Tenth Street may be able to help, having filled over 20,000 prescriptions for 2,281 people last year. The nonprofit serves eligible Forsyth and Stokes County residents and is running a campaign where pharmacy-designated donations are matched up to $100,000. Call ahead to check eligibility and medication availability.
3. 9/11 memorial events in the Piedmont Triad (wxii12.com) — Winston-Salem residents have several ways to honor 9/11 this Friday, including a dawn stair-climb at Allegacy Stadium and volunteer kit-making sessions at the Intergenerational Center for Arts and Wellness. The roundup also highlights ceremonies in nearby Forsyth and surrounding counties, giving you options to remember the day through reflection, service, or community gatherings.
4. Get tickets to see Cynthia Erivo face to face at WFU's Speaker Forum (wxii12.com) — Winston-Salem audiences can see award-winning performer Cynthia Erivo live when Wake Forest's Face to Face Speaker Forum opens its 2026–27 season at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum on September 16. Moderated by longtime "Wicked" music leader and current UNCSA instructor Dominick Amendum, the evening promises an in-depth conversation about Erivo's boundary-pushing work across stage and screen.
5. Hot Start not enough as Hot Rods fall to Dash in extra-innings (wnky.com) — Winston-Salem baseball fans saw the Dash edge the Bowling Green Hot Rods 9–8 in an extra-innings thriller at Truist Stadium, taking a 1–0 lead in the SAL Divisional Series. After trailing 6–0 early, Winston-Salem stormed back with big homers and a walk-off double. The series now shifts away from Winston-Salem for Game 2 on Thursday evening.
