Winston-Salem youth-curfew extension deadlocks as council members question what comes next (wschronicle.com) — Winston-Salem's youth curfew could be extended into 2027, but a 2-2 City Council Public Safety Committee vote means the full council will now decide after hearing more from residents. Police report fewer youth encounters and victimizations during curfew hours, while council members debate civil liberties, parental responsibility, and whether the city offers enough safe evening activities for teens.
2. Clark says Winston-Salem is getting ready to 'flush' $700,000 on Liberty Street. Other council members say it is time to try again. (wschronicle.com) — Winston-Salem leaders are weighing whether to auction off two shelter structures at the former Liberty Street Vendor Market to clear space for a long-requested community center serving East Winston. Council members are split over potentially "flushing" hundreds of thousands in past investment versus pushing ahead with a project residents say they want, with a key vote expected October 5 and an auction likely in November.
3. WSSU Homecoming 2026 website goes live in Winston-Salem (wxii12.com) — Winston-Salem State University has launched its official 2026 Homecoming website, giving locals and returning Rams key details on events, parking, and shuttles around Bowman Gray Stadium. The Nov. 1–7 "Forever Red" celebration includes a community parade, step show, concert, and the Fayetteville State football game, with free satellite parking and continuous shuttle service from Innovation Quarter.
4. The Grounds unveils first five retailers for new Winston-Salem mixed-use district (wxii12.com) — A major new mixed-use district called The Grounds is taking shape near Wake Forest University, bringing new restaurants, fitness options, and a credit union space to Winston-Salem. Planned as a game-day hub by the stadiums and fairgrounds, the $250 million project will open its Retail & Dining Village in fall 2027 and include student housing, offices, and significant public infrastructure upgrades.
5. 'Feels like a gut punch': Family of missing Winston-Salem man asks public for help (wxii12.com) — A 55-year-old Winston-Salem man, Marcus Simpson, has been missing for three weeks, and his family is urgently asking local residents to help find him. His car was reportedly seen near Winston Lake, and relatives say there were signs of a struggle at his Parkwood Court home. Anyone with information is urged to contact Winston-Salem police or Crime Stoppers immediately.
