1. Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools interim superintendent sworn in (wxii12.com) — Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools has a new interim superintendent, as Dr. Randy Bridges was sworn in Tuesday to lead the district for nine months starting October 1. The school board voted 8-1 to appoint Bridges, a veteran superintendent from several states, at a salary of about $210,000 while the district searches for a permanent leader.
2. Winston-Salem family helps invest in other Hispanic entrepeneurs (myfox8.com) — In Winston-Salem, the Alvarado family's jewelry business on Old Lexington Road is using its commercial space and resources to nurture other Hispanic-owned shops like Panaderia Arroyo. Through leasing to Latino entrepreneurs, sponsoring local high school soccer teams, and partnering with the Hispanic League on scholarships, they're helping build long-term opportunity for the city's growing Hispanic community.
3. 'Never take the little things for granted': Staten Island students gain life lessons on Habitat for Humanity service trip (silive.com) — Staten Island high school students spent a week in Winston-Salem helping Habitat for Humanity build homes and support local food and clothing shelters, directly assisting vulnerable residents here. Their work under the summer sun gave them new appreciation for community, teamwork, and small acts of service, while strengthening ties between volunteers and Winston-Salem neighbors.
4. MI Launches AI Skills Training, Kicks Off Multistate Roadshow (nam.org) — A national manufacturing workforce group is bringing its new free AI skills training roadshow to Winston-Salem in partnership with Smurfit Westrock, offering local manufacturers and students a chance to explore how AI fits into shop-floor jobs. The tour emphasizes practical, self-paced online courses designed to help workers understand and responsibly apply AI in real manufacturing settings.
5. How North Carolina ranks among the best foodie cities in America: Study (wxii12.com) — Winston-Salem landed near the bottom of a new national "foodie city" ranking, coming in 142nd out of 182 cities and scoring low on diversity, accessibility and quality of food options. The WalletHub study still found the city mid-range on affordability, while Greensboro and Charlotte performed notably better for food lovers.
