The Fargo Fire Department originally responded to multiple large mulch piles burning at 3:36 p.m. on July 17 at the Fargo Landfill. Firefighters assisted in controlling and mitigating the fire through Friday evening before Landfill staff assumed extinguishment responsibilities. High temperatures and wind conditions initially made extinguishing the flames difficult. The fire is believed to have been caused by sparks created while grinding and chipping trees into mulch combined with high heat.
