1. Landowner group sues over Wahpeton water sale for large dairy (kfgo.com) — Wahpeton-area residents are suing North Dakota's Department of Water Resources over a state-approved deal to sell city water for a massive 12,500-cow dairy that would share the Wahpeton Buried Valley Aquifer. They argue the plan risks depleting the city's only water source and nearby farmsteads' wells, while the dairy and legal challenges continue to move forward.
2. September 30: The Red House (prairiepublic.org) — Wahpeton's historic "Red House," once home to banker and legislator Walter Carter and later U.S. Sen. Porter McCumber, is finally getting a full restoration after decades of decline. A specialist owner is preserving its Queen Anne details, modernizing systems and rescuing a neighborhood landmark many locals feared might be demolished, symbolizing a broader renewal for the town.
3. Local veterans honored with Quilts of Valor (wahpetondailynews.com) — In Wahpeton, two local veterans were recently wrapped in gratitude with handmade Quilts of Valor recognizing years of National Guard service. Longtime resident Harold Formaneck and Tracy Muller, who served in Wahpeton's engineer units and deployed to Kosovo, Iraq and Kuwait, were honored for their deployments, disaster responses and decades of commitment to community and country.
4. North Dakota Children's Cabinet to gather public input with 'road show' stops in 11 cities in October (nd.gov) — Wahpeton families can speak directly with the North Dakota Children's Cabinet when its statewide "road show" stops at NDSCS's Student Center on Friday, Oct. 2, from 3 to 5 p.m. The visit invites residents to share concerns, learn about efforts to better coordinate children's services, and help shape future priorities for support systems across the state.
5. Hoppe helps NDSCS stay the course (wahpetondailynews.com) — Wahpeton readers saw NDSCS's Lady Wildcats notch a key home sweep over Williston State at the Clair T. Blikre Activities Center, tightening the Mon-Dak Conference race. A late third-set rally, sparked by freshman Allie Hoppe and strong net play from Samara Clemente, preserved the Wildcats' dominant home record and could determine who hosts the region tournament later this season.
