Coronavirus Numbers Jump In Ohio, Governor Cites Return To School

Ohio saw an uptick in new COVID-19 cases, deaths and hospitalizations on Tuesday.

COLUMBUS, OH — After three days of trending downward, Ohio's COVID-19 numbers jumped on Tuesday.

Gov. Mike DeWine said Tuesday he believes the jump in cases are a direct result of colleges and K-12 schools returning to session. He said Ohioans need to continue to take precautions and show concern for others.

In the past 24 hours, health officials confirmed 1,453 COVID-19 cases among Ohioans. That's up from 895 confirmed cases on Monday, and up versus the state's average of 1,037 new cases per day.

Ohio's other key COVID-19 metrics also spiked on Tuesday. Deaths and hospitalizations were up versus both Monday's numbers and the state's average.

At least 27 Ohioans died from COVID-19 complications on Tuesday. On Monday, 10 Ohioans died because of the virus. The state has averaged 22 COVID-19-related deaths per day over the past three weeks.

Hospitalizations related to the virus were also up on Tuesday. At least 103 Ohioans entered hospitals for COVID-19 treatment on Tuesday. Ohio has averaged 82 COVID-19-related hospitalizations per day.
