With limits on daily availability and four tickets per household, locals are encouraged to plan ahead to enjoy discounted visits, free parking, and regular zoo hours.
3. Family of man fatally shot by Akron police officer files $10 million lawsuit (cleveland.com) — A wrongful death lawsuit seeking $10 million has been filed against the City of Akron and several officers after a 2024 police shooting of Michael Jones in a U-Haul. The suit alleges excessive force and lack of justification, coming shortly after Akron settled another police shooting case involving a teenager.
4. Summit County man sentenced to 12 years in prison for committing crimes while out on parole (highlandcountypress.com) — An Akron man has been sentenced to 12 years in federal prison for heroin and fentanyl trafficking uncovered during a 2025 investigation focused on Akron. Federal agents say they tied him to multiple drug offenses while he was already on supervised release, underscoring ongoing efforts to curb opioid distribution in local neighborhoods.
5. Coalition's bid to overhaul city charter will go before Akron voters (beaconjournal.com) — Akron voters will see three major city charter amendments on the November ballot that target housing costs, tenant protections, and police oversight. A coalition of local civil rights, faith, and tenant groups gathered thousands of signatures to advance proposals on security deposits, fair housing protections, and expanded powers for the Citizens' Police Oversight Board.
