Today's riddle: What is the difference between a jeweler and a jailer? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Akron invests $300K toward downpayment help for first-time homebuyers (cleveland.com) — Akron is launching its new Akron Dreams program, offering forgivable loans of up to $7,500 to help about 35 first-time homebuyers with down payments and closing costs on homes in the city. Funded with $300,000 in federal HUD money and tied to Malik's broader housing strategy, the program targets residents, especially in historically underserved Akron communities, and includes financial education requirements.
2. New Akron Public School principal started career working in APS cafeteria (cleveland.com) — Akron's Schumacher Community Learning Center will welcome a new principal, Shelby Morgan, on Aug. 31, a leader who began her career serving lunches in an APS cafeteria. Morgan, a lifelong Akron Public Schools product, plans to tackle post-pandemic academic and social gaps while building on Schumacher's statewide PBIS recognition and rare National PTA School of Excellence honor.
3. 4 years after 2 kids died in Akron house fire, neighbors wonder why house hasn't been torn down (news5cleveland.com) — Neighbors on 7th Avenue in Akron are still living beside a burned-out, overgrown house more than four years after a deadly fire killed two children there, and they're demanding the city finally tear it down. Residents describe safety worries, nuisance wildlife, and constant grief, while a city spokesperson says officials are still gathering information about the property's status.
4. Major Akron drug dealer who shot at cop gets prison (fox8.com) — An Akron man has been sentenced to 20 to 25½ years in prison after firing at an Akron police officer during a 2023 chase and being convicted on multiple drug trafficking and weapons charges. Investigators tied him to the shooting through matching bullet casings, seized guns and narcotics from connected homes, and phone location data, prompting praise from the Summit County prosecutor for Akron officers' work.
