📰 News we're reading

1. Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank selects longtime employee as next president, CEO (cleveland.com) — A longtime Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank leader who lives in Akron's Highland Square will take over as president and CEO on Jan. 1, 2027, guiding services that support hungry families across Summit and surrounding counties. With demand at 15‑year highs and government food supplies down, the Foodbank is urging Akron residents to volunteer or donate, especially during Hunger Action Month when gifts are matched.

2. Akron Children's survey: Parents struggle with healthcare decisions (signalakron.org) — Akron Children's Hospital is responding to parents' confusion over online health advice by expanding its Healthy Info, Healthy Kids initiative, which offers evidence-based guidance through columns, videos and social media. Although the new survey excluded Ohio caregivers, Akron families can still use these tools and their pediatricians' advice to sort through conflicting information from AI, influencers and other online sources when making decisions for their kids.

3. School and district early literacy scores may fall in Tuesday's state report cards (cleveland.com) — Akron Public Schools is warning families it expects to lose about half a star on Ohio's new state report cards because of changes in how early literacy is scored. The shift centers on third-grade reading promotion rules and exemptions, which may lower scores statewide even as schools continue providing intensive reading support and monitoring plans for struggling students.

4. Akron photo quiz: Can you identify this breakfast spot? (signalakron.org) — Akron readers are invited to test their knowledge of the city's breakfast spots in this week's local photo quiz, after more than 100 Akronites nailed last week's challenge. The piece also highlights Signal Akron's neighborhood-focused reporting and asks residents to consider small monthly donations to keep coverage of schools, events and community life freely available across the city.

5. How Akron Children's ranked among pediatric hospitals in US News & World Report (kentucky.com) — Akron families relying on Akron Children's Hospital may want to know it's been ranked fifth among Ohio pediatric hospitals and 16th in the Midwest in the latest U.S. News & World Report listings. The hospital earned national recognition in behavioral and mental health, orthopedics and urology, while nearby Cleveland children's hospitals also scored strongly across multiple specialties that local families sometimes use for complex care.
