Today's riddle: What is clean when it is black and dirty when it is white? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. 'It's not right': Akron hit-and-run survivor urges driver to come forward after crash killed his dog (wkyc.com) — An Akron man is recovering in the hospital after a local hit-and-run crash that seriously injured him and killed his dog, and he's pleading for the driver to come forward. His family says Akron police have leads on a dark-colored vehicle, and they're urging anyone with information to contact investigators as they rethink pedestrian safety in the city.
2. Akron City Council announces funding for neighborhood projects (kentucky.com) — Akron residents and neighborhood groups can soon apply for 2027 Neighborhood Partnership Grants, with $150,000 available across the city's 10 wards for projects like gardens, youth programs, arts, and safety efforts. Online applications open Oct. 14 and close at noon Oct. 30, giving local nonprofits, block clubs, and faith groups a short window to pitch ideas that strengthen their blocks.
3. Rep. Sykes Announces $493,000 for TRIO Programs at the University of Akron (house.gov) — Nearly 900 Akron-area students each year will benefit from a new $493,314 annual TRIO Talent Search grant awarded to the University of Akron for the next five years. The funding will expand tutoring, counseling, and college-readiness support for first-generation and low-income students in Akron and Summit County, with local leaders highlighting its impact on families across Ohio's 13th District.
4. Akron police officer commended for helping homeless man who needed services (news5cleveland.com) — An Akron police officer's compassionate response to a homeless man on Bachtel Avenue led to a formal commendation and renewed attention on local support services. Instead of pursuing charges, Officer Steve Motil worked with Akron nonprofit Open M to get the man a shower, clean clothes, food, and dignity. The story highlights everyday, quieter acts of service by Akron officers.
5. Akron reaches deal with EPA to forgo $300 million sewage treatment facility (cleveland.com) — Akron has reached a tentative agreement with state and federal environmental regulators that would let the city skip building a $300 million sewage treatment facility, potentially easing future pressure on local rate-payers. The deal, still awaiting court approval and public comment, follows years of investment in the Akron Waterways Renewed! sewer overhaul. City leaders say savings can now shift toward improving the aging drinking-water system.
