1. Akron to host parade for high school ranked No. 1 in Ohio for academics (newsbreak.com) — Akron will honor Akron Early College High School with a Nov. 5 downtown parade after the school was ranked Ohio's top traditional public high school on the latest state report card. The Academic Champions parade will run along South Main Street and end with a Lock 3 celebration featuring students, staff, district leaders, and Mayor Shammas Malik. The school's strong test scores and college-focused program are drawing citywide recognition.
2. Akron Council continues discussion on amending zoning code (akron.com) — Akron City Council is weighing zoning code changes that could make it easier to build new homes on the city's many smaller vacant lots by eliminating minimum lot sizes and loosening several design requirements. Council also approved bond issues for sidewalk and street improvements and confirmed its next meeting on Oct. 19 at the Akron Municipal Building, which residents can attend or watch online.
3. Akron police release body-cam video of suspect shooting death (news5cleveland.com) — Akron residents can now view police body-camera footage from the Oct. 1 warrant service in which 34-year-old Johnathan Moore was fatally shot during an encounter with officers. The video shows officers entering an Akron residence, confronting Moore armed with a gun, and the moments leading to shots being fired. State investigators are reviewing the case and the detective involved is on paid leave.
4. Cleveland Clinic Akron General offering free breast exams soon (kentucky.com) — Women in Akron can get free clinical breast exams on Oct. 20 at The Front Porch on Grant Street, thanks to Cleveland Clinic Akron General's Cancer Center team. No appointment is needed, and staff will check for lumps, answer questions, and provide mammogram referrals. The event is open to any woman in the community, including those reentering after incarceration.
5. Police identify person of interest in fatal hit-and-run that killed pedestrian in Akron (cleveland.com) — Akron police have identified a person of interest and recovered a tan Cadillac SRX believed involved in last month's fatal hit-and-run that killed pedestrian Jesse McCool on South Main Street. Investigators are working with the Summit County Prosecutor's Office on potential charges, as officials note the case comes amid broader statewide concerns about pedestrian and cyclist safety.
