Rising salinity in Summit County's streams is emerging as a growing water quality concern, driven largely by winter road salt application, water softener discharge, and other sources of chloride input within the watershed. Kendra Heiser’s presentation examines the pathways through which salt enters local waterways and accumulates over time, often persisting well beyond the winter season. Elevated chloride levels can disrupt aquatic ecosystems by stressing sensitive macroinvertebrate and amphibian populations, altering stream chemistry, and degrading habitat for fish and other wildlife. Attendees will gain an understanding of the sources and scope of salt pollution in Summit County, its measurable effects on water quality and biological communities, and strategies being explored to reduce chloride loading and protect stream health for the future.

Kendra serves as the Furnace Run Watershed Coordinator, where she collaborates with local watershed organizations, communities, and stakeholders to implement innovative stormwater and watershed management strategies.

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. Program is free and open to the public.
