Sixty nine percent of the students in the Akron Public School District receive free or reduced meals. Many of these children are forced to walk to school, even on freezing cold days. And unfortunately, necessities like warm winter clothing can be hard to come by when food, housing, heat and healthcare take priority.

On Tuesday, October 16, FedEx Cares volunteers will visit Firestone Park Elementary School in Akron to put on a coat giving event for hundreds of kids in need. The joy-filled event will pair volunteers with young students to help them try on, and go home with, a brand new, warm winter coat. The gift of a new coat not only keeps a child warm, but provides a boost in self-esteem and the confidence to get to school on cold and wintry days.

The event is hosted by FedEx through its collaboration with Operation Warm, a national nonprofit dedicated to providing brand new winter coats to children living in low-income and below poverty households. Children are identified by qualification for the federal Free and Reduced Meal (FARM) Program. Firestone Park Elementary School has 83% of its students living in need.
