Amherst schools eye deficit spending in near future, voters set to decide additional funding (chroniclet.com) — Amherst residents are being asked to approve a new 5.97‑mill levy and a 4.9‑mill renewal to help Amherst Schools avoid deep deficit spending projected to begin in 2027. District treasurer Amelia Gioffredo says the levies would keep the district solvent through 2030, while failure could lead to a $17.6 million negative cash balance by 2031.
2. Amherst, Elyria Police team up in drone operations (morningjournal.com) — Amherst Police are joining Elyria Police in a new state-backed Drone as First Responder pilot program that can send drones to emergencies before officers arrive. Funded through ODOT's DriveOhio initiative, the two-year project will use BRINC Responder drones to provide real-time video and communication, aiming to improve safety and response for Amherst and neighboring communities.
3. Amherst vs. Olmsted Falls volleyball: New-look Bulldogs grind out four-set win (morningjournal.com) — Amherst volleyball fans saw the Comets push Olmsted Falls to four sets on Sept. 1, highlighted by strong performances from hitters like Abby Broaddus and Lola Candelario. Despite the loss, Amherst's scrappy defense and comeback in the third set stood out. The Comets quickly return to Southwestern Conference play by hosting Elyria on Sept. 3.
4. Parma man charged after human trafficking sting in Sheffield in May (UPDATED) (chroniclet.com) — Amherst police joined a multi-agency HEAL Human Trafficking Task Force operation in Lorain County that led to the indictment of a Parma man on prostitution and weapons charges. The sting, conducted in May around Sheffield businesses, targeted men allegedly seeking to pay for sex, with local departments and federal agents working together to make arrests and seize a handgun.
