3 Avon High Students Named National Merit Semifinalists

These high-performing students will have the chance to compete for scholarships.

AVON, OH β€” Three Avon High School students have been named National Merit Scholar Semifinalists. The trio will compete with an elite group of high schoolers for a chance to win scholarships.

More than 1.5 million students annually apply for National Merit Scholarships. Less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors become semifinalists. Avon's three semifinalists are: Tiara Eddington, Jacob Boesger and Matt LeHoty.

Eddington, a 16-year-old senior, is a member of the marching band and student council. She would like to attend Brigham Young University and intends to study Applied Mathematics. Outside of the classroom, she's an avid piano player.

"Work hard and focus on what is most important to you," was Eddington's advice for other students.

Boesger, 18, is a member of the school's cross country, robotics and academic challenge teams. He plays viola in the orchestra and plans to study chemistry or math in college. He has applied to Case Western Reserve University and the University of Pittsburgh. He enjoys hiking in his free time.

β€œFind something you are passionate about. Put all your efforts into that and be the best you can be at something you love," he advised other students.

LeHoty, 17, is a member of the varsity tennis team and is a member of student council. He plans to study computer science at either Case Western Reserve University or the University of Michigan. He enjoys gardening in his spare time and playing piano.

β€œMost people don’t set their sights high enough…you can accomplish anything if you work hard," was his advice to other students.
