5 Things: Holiday Weekend, Avon Football and Crocker Park Race

Enjoy the long holiday weekend, bring an umbrella in case of rain and keep an eye out for the Tea Party Express bus tour.

1. Tonight, the Avon Eagles (1-0) football team will face off against the Wellington Dukes (0-1) in Wellington. The Eagles are coming off a solid 38-7 win against Avon Lake, and are ready for the gridiron challenge. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. The Dukes stadium is located behind the Wellington Board of Education offices on Dickson Street.

2. is coming to Avon’s tomorrow, and will include a host of guests and speakers. Admission is free, and 5,000 people are expected to attend. Doors open at 3 p.m., the preshow starts at 4 p.m. and the buses are scheduled to roll in at 5 p.m.

3. For the long Labor Day weekend, expect some thunderstorms mixed with hot temperatures. On Saturday, forecasters are predicting a high of 91 with a 20 percent chance of rain. Sunday will bring a high of 81, scattered thunderstorms and a 60 percent chance of precipitation. Temperatures will cool to the mid 60s on Monday with a 30 percent chance of showers.

4. City Hall and the Avon City Schools will be closed in observance of Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 5. Government offices and classes will resume the following day. Also, get your shopping in early as many of Avon’s stores and shops will have limited holiday hours.

5. The 21st annual North Coast Challenge 5-mile run and 2-mile walk will raise funds for local community organizations like , Far West Center and the Kiwanis Club. The 5-mile run and 2-mile family walk start at 8 a.m. at Westlake’s Crocker Park. The Kids Fun Run starts at 9:30 a.m. The awards ceremony will be at 10 a.m. For more race information and online registration, visit the North Coast Challenge website.
