Another City Supports Seat Belt Pilot Lorain County Leads Ohio

School Bus Safety Concern: "Seat Belt Supporter" at Main Street Wellington Antique Cars Festival

Another City Supports Seat Belt Pilot, Lorain County Leads Ohio & Updates
The Lorain City Council after hearing a presentation on the “seat belts in school buses” issue, has now joined other Councils, e.g. Vermilion, and approved (9/16/19) a Resolution supporting a Seat Belt Pilot Program in their school district like the existing Avon Lake School District Program. To encourage city councils and school districts to initiate Pilot Programs, i.e. purchase at least one new school bus with lap-shoulder seat belts as a trial, the School Bus Safety Alliance has pledged to seek financial support from social action groups, foundations, government agencies and/or local businesses for these efforts. This offer has been made to several city councils and/or school systems and was highlighted in a recent article published in Cleveland.com (See Link Below).
The School Bus Safety Alliance was recently honored by the Busch Caregiver Recognition Program for our volunteer community work on promoting children’s safety by encouraging school districts to place seat belts in their school buses and awarded “Caretaker (Volunteer) of September, 2019”. Also, the Alliance recently participated in the Sheffield Village and Avon Lake Homecoming Parades, the “Fall in Love with Wellington” Event and their Antique Cars Festival. Main Street Wellington, the sponsor of these events, generously supported space for a School Bus Safety Alliance information table.
Furthermore, according to a School Bus Safety Report, the Ohio State Highway Patrol found that in 2019 ~800 school bus crashes occurred in Ohio with Lorain County leading the state with175 school bus driving violations and crashes. During the period 2016-2018 the Highway Patrol found ~4000 school bus crashes in Ohio (See Link Below). In addition, a recent review article on the status of state regulations and voluntary school district activity on seat belts in school buses stated… “compartmentalization is not sufficient in protecting students from side-impact and rollover crashes” (See Link Below). The Compartmentalization Theory that uses padded seat backs to protect student passengers during crashes is the primary safety approach in current school buses.

Daisy Arntz, age 5, who is the daughter of the Jennifer Arntz, Executive Director of Main Street Wellington tried on a seat belt at the Antique Car Festival on a perfect Fall day. She has experience riding a bumpy school bus to Kindergarten at Black River Schools. She visited the Seat Belt Safety Alliance informational booth that was courtesy of Main Street Wellington.
