AVON, OH — The Avon Aquatic Facility will be closed for the summer 2020 season, Mayor Bryan Jensen announced this week. The decision to close was made to protect residents from the new coronavirus, the mayor said.

“This is one of many difficult decisions we’ve had to make as we continue our fight to end the spread of the virus,” said Jensen in a statement. “I know how important – and fun – our Avon pool and other summer recreation activities are to our community and how disappointing this decision will be to kids and parents. But ultimately, the health and safety of everyone who lives in our city must be the priority.”

Residents who have already purchased 2020 summer passes will get a refund.

Jensen said the following factors influenced his decision:

  • The difficulty of enforcing social distancing protocols with large crowds
  • Trying to disinfect the facility frequently enough to stop the spread of the virus. Jensen specifically said disinfecting the dressing rooms and restrooms, pool ladders, slides, lounge chairs, snack bar and other public areas would be a problem
  • Trying to hire and train lifeguards on new health and safety guidelines as well as standard lifeguard procedures

In a letter to the community, Jensen said the consequences of closing the pool weighed heavily on him. Ultimately, he said, the safety of the community had to come first.

"Enforcing social distancing at a swimming pool would be difficult, if not impossible," Jensen said.
