Avon, Avon Lake COVID-19 Update: Cases Down In Lorain County

Lorain County may only be classified as "red" for a week or two, officials say.

AVON LAKE, OH — Lorain County is seeing a drop in new COVID-19 cases, health officials said this week.

"Lorain County Health Commissioner, David Covell reported that the Lorain County weekly number dropped to 84 county wide, which is half as many as the week before. He expects that we will drop from the "red" category down to "orange" either this week or next," Avon Lake Mayor Greg Zilka said.

The Ohio National Guard hosted a free, pop-up testing site in Avon Lake last week. The results of that testing are not yet available, Zilka said. The mayor promised to update residents on those results once he has received the information.

However, last week in Avon Lake, there were 14 new cases of COVID-19 confirmed among residents. That's up from nine new cases the week before. There have now been more than 200 COVID-19 cases confirmed among Avon Lake residents.

In Avon, officials said there were seven COVID-19 cases confirmed during the week of Aug. 10, two from local nursing facilities. The week before there were 11 COVID-19 cases found among residents, three from local nursing facilities.
