Avon, Avon Lake Will Have Halloween Night Trick-or-Treating

Costumes should include a cloth face covering, which fits over the nose and mouth, health officials said.

AVON, OH — The cities of Avon and Avon Lake will hold Halloween trick-or-treating on Oct. 31, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

As the holiday approaches, and COVID-19 continues to pose a threat, city officials are asking residents to follow guidance issued by Lorain County Public Health.

"There's no such thing as zero risk," health officials said. "If you participate in Halloween activities, please celebrate safely."

Health officials issued guidance for parents, children and residents handing out candy during the holiday.

For parents:

  • Have children wash their hands before they eat their candy
  • Bring hand sanitizer and a flashlight while out trick-or-treating
  • Avoid homemade candy, eat only factory-made treats
  • If you don't feel comfortable trick-or-treating, try holding a virtual costume party instead

For children:

  • Wear a cloth face mask which covers the nose and mouth
  • Go trick-or-treating with family, not friends and other people from outside your house
  • Wear reflective clothing
  • Walk only on sidewalks or on the edge of the road facing traffic

For residents handing out treats:

  • Wash your hands and use sanitizer often — even if you're wearing gloves
  • Wear a cloth face masks which covers the nose and mouth
  • Keep social distance while handing out treats
  • Avoid having kids grab treats from a bowl — consider using a PVC pipe to slide treats to kids
