Avon Elementary Students Raise Nearly $50,000 for Leukemia Society
The kids were able to raise a huge amount of money without spending more than a nickel in a day.
Over the past 12 years, the Avon Heritage Elementary School Student Council has been raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society by collecting pennies and other coins for the society’s “Pennies for Patients” campaign, the result of which has been a whopping total of $49,365.39.
The students were recently awarded the Champion for a Cause award by the society for collecting such a remarkable sum over the years. This year alone the council raised $9,232.67 and are already hoping to hit the $10,000 mark next year.
“It’s not their fault they have cancer,” said fifth-grader Julia Laforet in a recent Support Avon Schools Facebook post. “They have suffered so much. We just really want to help them.”

This year, Heritage Elementary was third out of 500 schools in the society’s Northern Ohio region in terms of money collected during a campaign. More than $500,000 was raised by students in the region this year.
